Zuzuche: 2024 Spring Festival Global Self-Driving Report

Car rental platform Zuzuche saw a 730% year-on-year increase in outbound travel car rental orders for Chinese New Year 2024. Their report shares top destinations, travel trends, and important generational differences among Chinese outbound travelers.

Car rental platform Zuzuche reported a 730% year-on-year increase in outbound travel car rental orders for Chinese New Year 2024, with a 56% increase for domestic orders. Their CNY report notes that demand for overseas car rentals has been extremely strong for all of 2024 so far.

Top Destinations: Strong Demand for Long-Haul Self-Driving Trips

The top 10 countries for overseas car rentals for CNY were: Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, UAE, Malaysia, Italy, Spain, Norway, UK, and Turkey, showing strong demand for long-haul travel among self-driving travelers. The outbound destinations with the fastest growth for car rentals were: Madrid, Christchurch, Rome, Brisbane, Kuala Lumpur, Tromsø (Norway), Gold Coast, Hobart (Australia), Abu Dhabi, Langkawi, Seville, and Riyadh.

Spring Festival Outbound Travel Trends: Families and Older Travelers

Family travel dominated outbound self-driving during CNY, according to Zuzuche’s data. For example, family travel accounted for 44% of car rentals in New Zealand, and 38% in Australia.

In contrast to last summer and 2023’s October Golden Week holiday when consumers born in the 1990s were the core of Zuzuche’s outbound market, Chinese New Year was all about the post-80s and post-70s generations. Travelers born in the 1980s made up around half of outbound travelers using Zuzuche.

Generational Differences Among Chinese Self-Driving Travelers

Older travelers spent more and rented larger cars for their family trips, with post-80s spending 20.5% more than post-90s, and post-70s spending 27.3% more. The 70s and 80s generations also rented their cars for slightly longer (0.3 days) than post-90s. Larger cars were in demand for family travel, with a 57% increase in orders for seven-seater cars.

Zuzuche’s data shows that the older the traveler, the more likely they are to travel to long-distance locations. Destinations in Oceania were particularly popular with travelers born in the 1970s, while post-90s consumers stayed closer to home around Southeast Asia.
